 Atretochoana eiselti is one of the weirdest animals ever discovered, mainly because it looks almost identical to a giant purple snake, even though it isn’t a snake at all. 

It’s actually a rare amphibian related to salamanders and caecilians. Because of its appearance, people nicknamed it the “penis snake,” and photos of it went viral when researchers rediscovered specimens in Brazil’s Amazon region.

What makes this creature truly unusual is that it has no lungs. Instead of breathing air the normal way, it absorbs oxygen directly through its skin, a process called cutaneous respiration. Scientists believe this is possible because it lives in warm, fast-moving rivers with oxygen-rich water.

Very little is still known about its behavior, diet, or population because sightings are extremely rare. Some specimens have been found over 30 inches long, giving them an almost prehistoric appearance. 

Despite its bizarre look, Atretochoana eiselti is harmless to humans and spends most of its life hidden underwater, far from people.
